Job Bank

There has been a great deal of talk about the UAW "Jobs Bank" lately. for those that don't know what the job bank is, it was designed to pay UAW workers when they were not working. Originally it was intended to pay workers when there was a short, 3-4 week or so period of un employment due to changing from one model to another, parts shortages ect. It was meant to prevent workers from having to file for un employment for short term un employment. As such, it was a pretty good idea.

However, as time passed, it became to be used to keep UAW members paid when their was a slowdown in car sales that was not short term. Thus with the slow down in the economy the UAW pushed for, and management agreed, to use it for long/undetermined periods of what would otherwise be un employment. That is where the jobs bank went wrong. It was never intended to keep people employed in times of shrinking car sales and shrinking market share.
